KYO MACHIYA - Human Friendly Conventional Houses of Kyoto -
In Kyoto, people were living in conventional old style houses called MACHIYA or KYO MACHIYA, usually consists of GENKAN (entrance space), MISENOMA (business room along side of the street), TUBONIWA (small garden at the center of the house in order to take in the lights and winds), HANARE (rooms separated from the main building), and OKUNONIWA (garden at the back end) in its premises. Some houses even had KURA (separated building used as a storage for the family treasures) .
Since my parents were running a kimono-related business in NISHIJIN district, my grandma often told me “go to the back, we're having a lot of customers”. We often hear non-Kyoto native people saying, “wow, the entrance is narrow, but the length of house itself is quite long”. It’s so true that houses in Kyoto are called UNAGI no NEDOKO (bed for eels). In some houses, you even have to wear/take off sandals every time you go back and forth within the house.
Anyway, I still remember the nice and comfortable breezes went through the house. MACHIYAs are designed for natural ventilation which is really human friendly and make people reside there feel very comfortable. Please come visit our “Yumeyakata Oike Bettei Villa". If you get dressed in Kimono in the nice and comfortable atmosphere of special KYO MACHIYA, it will be your luxurious memory that will vividly remain in you heart for a long long time.
